After the Women’s World Chess Championship, Anna and her family are vacating in Ukraine. We succeeded in contacting her to ask a couple of quick questions:

Q: Hello Anna, how do you anticipate your first visit to Greece?

A: It a great pleasure to participate in European Club Cup in Kallithea. It is going to be my first visit to Greece and I am very exited about it.

Q: What are your team’s ambitions?

A: I am playing for a Belorussian club EPAM. We have a very strong team and I think we have good chances to win medal!

The 2008 ECC will probably be the last practical test for Anna before the Dresden Chess Olympiad that starts on 12th November.

Magnus Carlsen

ECC 2008 players preview

After a very busy third quarter of 2008, Magnus Carlsen has managed to gain yet another 11 rating points which brings him to 4th position in the FIDE October rating list. The young Norwegian prodigy is only 5 points away from the N1 spot and he will surely try to attack the position, having in mind his direct opponent and currently leader of the provisional standings, Veselin Topalov, has a match with Gata Kamsky, while the previous leader Vishy Anand will have to face Vladimir Kramnik for the WC title.

Magnus Carlsen will start the attack of the first place from the top chess competition of Europe for 2008 – the European Chess Club Cup in Kallithea, that will take place October 16-24. Carlsen will play for the second seeded team of Mika Chess Yerevan, together with GM Aronian, GM Gelfand, GM Sargissian, GM Jobava, GM Petrosian, and GM Pashikian (photos of the team members here).

It will not be an easy task for Magnus Carlsen to lead the team, as in the opponents teams there are 21 GMs over 2700 ELO and 78 players over 2600 ELO, a true chess gallaxy.
