Chess Grand Prix in Baku

Carlsen, Svidler, Mamedyarov, and Kamsky among the top seeded

There are only 5 days to the start of the Grand Prix Series chess tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan. 14 of the top chess players will engage in interesting round robin competition with average rating over 2700.

Chessdom. com will provide you with live commentary once again. For the Grand Prix tournaments live games will be with IM David Dejf Kaňovský, IM Miodrag Perunovic, and Goran Urosevic.

Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen is the top seeded player of the event. He gained 32 points in the April FIDE rating list to climb to number 5 in the FIDE standings. Now he has a new challenge - nice performance in the FIDE Grand Prix series, and eventual attack of the World Chess title and the N1 spot in the FIDE list.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is currently 7th in the world with ELO 2752. He has been in top 10 for quite a while, but does not seem to enjoy media attention in the world. Yet, he is the one who is always ready to smile for a picture for the Chessdom photographers or give an interview any time of the day.

Mamedyarov is ready to make another important step in his career and will surely strive for the top spot at the Baku Grand Prix.

Peter Svidler

Svidler was unstoppable at the ETCC in Greece and during the Russian Team Championship. He is one of the most experienced players at the Grand Prix chess series and was top seeded until the April list came out.

Svidler definitely lacked invitations for top tournaments this year, so he enjoyed smaller, but nice events. The Chess Grand Prix in Baku is his chance to show Morelia and Corus that not having him there was a mistake.

Gata Kamsky

In the middle of the Kamsky - Topalov saga, the number one American chess player is ready to start his hunt for the World Championship title. Kamsky has been inactive during the January - April list, which suggests that he has had some serious preparation period.

Kamsky has just won the title in the Russian Team Championships and is ready to start his hunt for yet another first place.
